The Music Industry

The music industry : attitudes towards different legal and/or illegal solutions? The use of the internet for promoting music, exchanging music, making music while avoiding the music industry, etc.

Subject :

What are the various supports which allow to promote its music without passing by music industry ?

The music industry is the business of music. Although it encompasses the activity of many music-related businesses and organizations, it is currently dominated by the "big four" record groups, a.k.a. "the major labels"/"the majors" — Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner — each of which consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets.

Nowadays, the music industry knows an important crisis because of illegal downloads and also legal downloads because people can buy only one song instead of buying the full album. The music industry tries to find solutions to promote, exchange and make music. Internet, for example, seems been a good mean.

1/ Illegally download music lead to less money for the artists because it’s just like you would go in a store and stole the album and then go away. The music industry is declining because of that. Plus even if you buy a cd on itunes for example, you pay less because you don’t have the box, the record sleeve, the CD and those things which are available in stores aren’t bought so they are made for nothing…

2/ First, you need a clear goal and thanks to that, you can then target the right audience. Third, you need a promo package, fine your niche and bribe the audience. Brand your music is the sixth step and the last one is to keep track of your contacts.

3/ Youtube is free, well-known and people can easily access to it, word by mouth works better thanks to it.

  7. 1/ The singers' revenue is decreasing because when we download a song, it's just a song and not all the songs of this singer: "That, and how do you explain why music revenue is down so drastically compared to the good ol’ days. Well, that can be explained, I think, because when people buy music from iTunes they’re not necessarily buying an entire album."
2/ There are a lot of stages to promote our own music. But the 4 more important are to identify our goals, target the right audience, to have a promo package and to find our niche.
3/ You tube is a very good way to promote music because everybody has Internet , which means that, as a musician, you literally have a worldwide audience at your fingertips.
4/ I have heard just about one singer, it's Gregoire, a French artist.
5/ Ummhh.. I don't know if I can say it, but yes! I was used to download by illegal means. But since 1 month, I can't anymore, because the software that I used is closed because of judicial reasons.
