« The Virtual University »
Often used in the USA, virtual universities know a huge popularity nowadays. The principle of the virtual university is simple: give the courses of higher education in line through multiples tools. Virtual schools are not free schools: indeed, you have to pay to have access to the content, for example, Open University, the first virtual university costs between £3000 to £16,000. Virtual universities can be seen as an alternative of “physical universities” since they provide courses for those who can’t attend classes because they are sick, parents or just living abroad. In any case, students can study at home at their own rhythm, with a perfect timetable, no students talking around them, no uncomfortable chairs… just like the current multimedia class. The question here is to know how virtual tools such as videos, blogs, chats, text messages can be used to conduct a university course online.
1. What does this picture make you think about ? http://prizma.haifa.ac.il/mich-vu.jpg

You may all think that Google in only a search engine actually, it has a lot of functionalities and tools such as “Google for Educators”
2. Go to: http://www.google.com/educators/index.html what is Google for Educators? What does it offer to help teachers?
3. Now, go to page 2 of http://www.youblisher.com/p/30257-Google/ how many sites, in Google, can help a teacher to create his own site? Which one would you choose? Why?
4. Go to: http://www.cleanapple.com/blog/?p=208 how many steps there are to create a site?
5. http://jolt.merlot.org/vol6no2/kovalik_0610.pdf Read from page 3 (from “Research questions”) to 7 (“… with text messaging.”) What is the subject of this study? Does this study led to a positive or a negative conclusion?
6. Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f_FtzgL9y4 can you briefly explain the main differences between this “virtual class” and a “normal” English class in school.
Questionnaire:
1. Do you think that virtual universities are better than the “physical” ones?
2. Would you like to receive SMS from the university? Why?
3. Do you think that a visual support (videos) make the explanations easier to understand?
4. Is this new way to learn and teach a representation of our society, the next step in learning?

1/ This picture makes me think about a website map
2/ Google for Educators is a website created to help teachers by offering them ideas for their lessons
3/ There are 3 sites which can help a teacher to create his own site. I could choose Google Workshop for Educators because it educates by a new way which cans be like a leisure.
4/ To create a site there are 5 steps.
5/ The subject of this study is the student's way of using text messages. Students use so many times their text messages that teachers think about make their lessons by this way. This study led to a positive conclusion.
6/ In this virtual class, the teacher is alone and he talks to a camera. There is no exchange with the studiants and no pronunciation. The teacher does his lesson as he wants.

    Questionnaire
1/ No, I think it is better to see studiants and teachers to study and to talk.
2/ No, I prefer email than text messages. I think text messages are too personals.
3/ No, I think it is harder to understand and everybody can understand differents things which could not be the good ones.
4/ I hope no. All the pupils or studiants have learnt by going to school with their friends where they could talk to their teachers, and it is a real good way to learn.

  2. Good comments, Emilie. I agree that, despite the advantages of using multimedia in a course, having a teacher's presence is crucial to maximal learning.

    1. This picture make me thing about a universitary campus and maybe other planet because of the colour.
    2. Google for educators are various sites which permit teachers to improve their knowledge and it offer the possibility of a virtual system of classes.
    3. 3 sites can help teacher.I would choose the workshop for educators because it permit to improve teachers learn.
    4. There are 5 steps to create a site.
    5. The subject deals with the fact that students are addicted of texting and teachers thought it could be a good mean to make their virtual classes. It led to a positive conclusion , teachers seems to agree.
    6. The video shows the difference between the two kind of classes, the physical one still better because you have relationship with the teacher.

    Questionnaire:

1.I think physical universities are important because it is better to evolve in a place with social relations.
    2. Why not. It could be a good solution in case of teacher's absence.
    3. Virtual support doesn't make always the explanation better , but sometimes images or signs can be easier to understand.
    4. It coul be possible that this kind of system will develop itself in our future society maybe because of the teacher's lackness.

  4. 1) This picture makes me think about a labyrinth with all the elements constituing the university, but here they are separated.

    2) For Educators, Google is a site to support teachers ton help students and forecast their knowledge. To help teachers, it offers training.

    3) In Google, three sites can help a teacher to create his own site. I would choose Google Teacher Academy because there are more possibilities.

    4) To create a site, there are five steps.

    5) The subject of this study is the impression that students from some courses by cell phones. This study leds to a negative conclusion.

    6) The main differences between this "virtual class" and a "normal" English class in school are that in virtual class you can see what you learn and in a "normal" English class you just learn without any images, you don't see the things in reality.

    Questions :

    1) I think that virtual universities are good because you can "live" what you learn, but I don't think is better than the "physical" ones because you don't have any contacts with the professor and the mates.

    2) I wouldn't like to receive SMS from the university because I think the number of mobile phones are only for people with whom you are link.

    3) Yes, I think a visual support makes the explanations easier to understand.

    4) I think this new way can be a representation of our society to learn and teach, it's going to develop but it can't be totally the next step in learning.

    1) This picture makes me think about a website map used by students.

    2) Google For Educators is a website which puts forward ideas to teachers for their courses.

    3) 3 sites can help a teacher to create his own site. I would choose the Google Workshop for Educators because of its high-energy professional development experience, and because I think it's better than the others.

    4) There are 5 steps to create a site.

    5) The subject of this study is about the fact that students use text messaging a lot. And teachers think it could be a good way to make classes with them. They seems to agree with that, so, this study led to a positive conclusion.

    6) In a "virtual class", we just can see the teacher talking about the course, but there isn't any exchange. We can't ask any questions if we don't understand. And it's why a "normal class" is better.

    Questionnaire :

    1) No, in my opinion, virtual universities can't be better because of a lack of exchange.

    2) Why not, because we sometimes forget to watch our mails and with an SMS, everybody can know the new just when the message is send.

    3) No, a visual support doesn't make the explanations easier to understand, except if the teacher wants to learn us about pronunciation or if he really wants to show situations with images.

    4) It's a representation of our society and its evolution but, personally, I think it's not a good way for the future because nothing replaces a real class with a teacher in front of students and with whom we can have a real exchange.

  6. 1)This picture makes me think about a video game's menu.
2)For educator Google is a good way to be supported in their wish to encourage students to improve their abilities.
It offers a guide to use Google tools for their classroom. They can find examples of new nice ways to do classes. And other teachers give their own account about it, and you can talk with in direct with them and other members.
3)There 3 sites which can help teacher to create his own site. I'd choose the C.U.E because as it said in the menu of its website, its "a nonprofit educational corporation" which works to improve the school success from preschool to college. And so, as many children haven't their parents at home to help it's can bu usefull for children who want a support.
    4) There 5 steps for the creation of a site.
5)The subject of this study is the addicted behaviour of students about the use of their cell phones. And we note that the conclusion is enough positive because they realise the addicted character of the cell phones use.
6)The difference between virtual and normal classes is that there are different ways to say hello and goodbye according the last time you have seen someone. And obviously the energy you put in it can be observed face to face but not on the screen. The body language is very important because it translates the truth of our thoughts. It adds more feeling with also our intonation. Talking is specific way to express yourself and having conversation on Internet can be closed to writing.

    Questionnaire:
    1) It's depends on what it concernes. Because it can an advantage for unable people who can't leave home for several reasons. But if we see on a health point of view and the weel-being, I think it's dangerous. Because screens make tired eyes and brains of people. Moreover if we don't have to go out, as we have to change class rooms in school, it can cause vertebra problems. And to finish the psychological health is endangered because we see nobody and we don't receive the light that the body need to feel good. Moreover we can develop important mental and physicalogical diseases and also a problem of sociability.
But in the other side virtual class avoids carrying heavy bags which is also a problem.
2)I wouldn't because all work we have to do is already "stressing", so we don't need teachers remind us we have something to do out the university. Because we're still thinking about which homework we have to do. And when we come back home it's to take a breath, to live a little bit normaly before go back to work.
3)Maybe it can be usefull for complicated topics, but if something it's not clear I think it's better ask for teacher explanations, because normaly people who want to become teachers must know how explain to the other. And if it's not they have to learn it because it's important to know express his thoughts and exlpain them by words.
    4) I hope it won't be the only way even if sometimes we would prefer learn at home rahter than waiting many hours for just one hour of class a day at school; in this case virtual class can be advantagious.

    1) When I see this picture I think about a university campus in the US like a little world.

    2) Google for Educators is a website that offers tools to teachers such as activities for students, posters, chat between teachers who can help each other.

    3) There are 3 sites. I would choose CUE because it seems to be more serious (extension .org) and more organized. It offers conferences for example. Moreover it is a non profit corporation.

    4) There are 5 steps to create a website : create the site, create the welcome page, create the anouncements page, add documents and references to other websites, add presentations, calendars...

    5) The study deals with messages send by teachers on their students' mobile phone, the reactions of these students and the type of message they can receive.
The result seems to be positive. Teachers and students seem to think that it is a good mean to learn differently even if this study was lead on a small part of students.

    6) There are some differences. First students are not in front of the teacher. It is not a dialogue and students can't participate or react. But it is more ludic because the teacher can add something to the video that he could not add in a "normal" lesson (such as "Hi" or "Bye" next to him when he says the words).

    QUESTIONNAIRE :
    1) I think that it is not the same way to learn. Virtual universities can be more ludic because they are new and offer many tools but for me a virtual lesson can't replace a physical one because with the physical ones we can react and participate and I think that it remains the best way to learn. Moreover with a virtual lessons we have not social contacts with teachers and other students.

    2) I would not receive messages from the university because my mobile phone is my personal life and a don't want to miw personal messages and those from the university.

    3) In some cases visual supports can make the explanations easier. For example with diagram, maps or somethings like that.

    4) Yes it is a representation of our society more and more connected and which uses more more and more new technologies.
But I don't think taht the majority of teachers and students want to replace physical lessons at the university with virtual ones on computer or at least not yet.

    5) The object of this study is the fact that students are obsessed by texting ans teachers think it would be a good mean to have virtual classes with them. This study led to a positive conclusion.

    6) There are differences between a virtual class and a normal english class: in a virtual class there is not exchange between the student and the teacher, and you can't ask any questions if you don't understand something.

    Questionnaire:

    1) From my point of view virtual classes can't be better than normal classes because there is not exchange between the teacher and the student.

    2) I agree to receive SMS from the university but only if the teacher is absent.

    3) No I think it's harder to understand because when you look a video it's borring to listen to a person who is talking without any exchange with you, it's more difficult to stay focus on the video.

    4) I think it's a representation of our society which is more and more connected, but I hope that it won't be like that in the future because I prefer to have a real exchange with the teacher.
